Common car problems, in plain English

What it probably is, and how soon to bring it in.

My brakes squeal or grind

A high squeal usually means the pads have worn to their built-in warning tab. Grinding means metal on metal. Either way, come in soon; grinding sooner.

The check-engine light is on

Steady light: book a visit this week. Flashing light: the engine is misfiring badly, so ease off and call us before driving far.

The car pulls to one side

Often tire pressure, sometimes alignment, occasionally a sticking brake. Check the pressures first; if it still pulls, we'll take a look.

The A/C blows warm

Usually a slow refrigerant leak. We find the leak before recharging, so you're not paying to refill it every summer.

It shakes at highway speed

Most often a wheel out of balance, especially after new tires or a pothole. Quick to check, quick to fix.

It clicks but won't start

Typically a weak battery or a loose terminal. If you get a jump, come straight here and keep it running.
