Lighting design
A room is lit in layers.
Most rooms have one layer: a fixture in the middle of the ceiling. Comfortable rooms have three or four, each on its own switch or dimmer. Try it.
Warmth matters as much as brightness.
LED bulbs come in color temperatures measured in kelvin. For living spaces we usually specify warm light, and fixtures that dim warmer as they dim lower, the way incandescent bulbs used to.
