No heat

Heating

Usually caused by

  • Failed igniter or flame sensor
  • Tripped safety limit from a clogged filter
  • Thermostat or power fault

Safe to check

  • Thermostat set to Heat and a few degrees above room temperature
  • Furnace power switch on (it looks like a light switch near the unit)
  • Filter not packed with dust

If it is below freezing outside and the house is cooling fast, call instead of sending a form.

Not cooling

Cooling

Usually caused by

  • Failed capacitor or contactor
  • Low refrigerant from a leak
  • Frozen indoor coil from restricted airflow

Safe to check

  • Thermostat set to Cool, fan on Auto
  • Outdoor unit breaker and disconnect switch on
  • Return grilles not blocked by furniture

If you see ice on the copper lines, turn cooling off and run the fan only until we arrive.

New noise

Either

Usually caused by

  • Worn blower motor bearing
  • Loose panel or ductwork
  • Debris in the outdoor fan

Safe to check

  • Note when it happens: start-up, running, or shut-off
  • Record a short video if you can do it safely

Grinding or screeching that gets louder is worth a call today rather than a booking.

Water leaking

Either

Usually caused by

  • Clogged condensate drain line
  • Failed condensate pump
  • Cracked drain pan

Safe to check

  • Turn the system off to stop more water
  • Move anything stored near the unit
  • Check whether the condensate pump has power

Water near electrical connections is a reason to switch the system off at the breaker.

Turns on and off

Either

Usually caused by

  • Oversized equipment
  • Dirty flame sensor
  • Thermostat placed near a heat source

Safe to check

  • Time a few cycles: how long on, how long off
  • Replace the filter if it is dirty

Short cycling wears equipment quickly, so it is worth fixing even when the house feels fine.

Burning or gas smell

Heating

Usually caused by

  • Dust burning off at first start (brief and normal)
  • Overheating motor or wiring
  • Gas leak

Safe to check

  • Gas smell: leave the house and call the gas utility or 911 from outside
  • Electrical smell: turn the system off at the breaker

A gas smell is an emergency for the utility first. Call us after the house is safe.
