In an emergency

Stop the water first. Four steps.

Open

1. Find the main shut-off

Usually in the basement or utility room, on the wall closest to the street, just after the water meter. In a slab house, look in a closet near the water heater or in the garage.

How we explain things

Why your water heater is making that noise.

Popping or rumbling from a tank water heater is usually sediment: minerals from the water that settle on the bottom and trap pockets of water that boil against the burner.

What it means
The heater works harder and the tank bottom wears faster.
What we do
Flush the tank, check the anode rod, and test the relief valve.
When to replace
Rust in the hot water, a leak at the base, or a tank past its warranty years.
