Landscape design & build

Outdoor rooms built from stone, soil and patience.

Fieldstone designs and builds terraces, walls and gardens that look like they have always been there, then looks after them season by season.

Old dry-stone wall running along a green slope

Stone first.

New England is built on fieldstone. Farmers pulled it from the ground and stacked it into walls that still mark property lines two centuries later. We work in the same tradition: local stone, laid dry where we can, set on a base that drains, and shaped to the slope rather than fighting it.

That patience shows in the finished work. A wall that leans the right way, a step with a comfortable rise, a terrace that sheds water away from the house.

Hardscape & stonework

Dry-laid walls, bluestone terraces, fieldstone steps and paths. Built on proper base and drainage, so they stay level through decades of frost.

Stone steps flanked by lavender and ornamental planting

Planting & gardens

Native and well-adapted plants arranged in layers, so the garden has structure in winter and color from April to October.

Complete outdoor rooms

Terraces for dinner, a fire for October, a path to the far end of the garden. Designed as one place, built in one season.

From the ground up

  1. 1

    Walk the site

Slope, soil, sun, drainage and how you use the yard.

  2. 2

    Design

A plan and a planting list you can hold, with a phased budget.

  3. 3

    Build

One crew, one foreman, from excavation to the last stone.

  4. 4

    Care

Seasonal visits so the garden grows into the design.

Design visits begin in winter, for building in spring.

Tell us about the property. We usually start with a walk around it together.
